Dr. Daniel C. Carter, Ph.D.
Dr. Daniel C. Carter, Ph.D is an American scientist, crystallographer, inventor, and biotechnology entrepreneur. Among many accomplishments, he is the author of numerous peer reviewed publications including seminal papers in Science and Nature. As a crystallographer, he is the Principal Investigator that led the research group which successfully determined the atomic structure and chemistry of human serum albumin, the major protein of the circulatory system. As an accomplished inventor with numerous patents, he developed the ferritin and NSP10 self-assembling nanoparticle platforms for vaccines and nanomaterials, which hold significant promise for therapeutic and diagnostic advancements.
During his career at NASA, Dan served as the Chief of the Biophysics and Advanced Materials Branch at Marshall Space Flight Center and later received the Senior Executive Service appointment to the NASA Chief Scientist for Biophysics. During Dan's time as a Flight Principal Investigator, both at NASA and in the private sector, he coordinated an international co-investigator group of scientists conducting microgravity crystal growth experiments on the Space Shuttle, Russian Mir, and International Space Station.
While at NASA, Dan received many awards, including multiple NASA Inventor of the Year awards and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. After leaving NASA in 1997 to pursue entrepreneurial interests, he became a founder, CEO, and CSO of New Century Pharmaceuticals, Inc., an albumin structure-based biotechnology company active from 1997-2024. Dr. Carter currently serves as a consultant and Chief Scientist for Albumin Therapeutics, LLC, and in his private capacity maintains active research in multiple and diverse scientific disciplines, including astronomy where he is the author-originator of a new ground-breaking theory described in the recently published book: The Universe Reframed: A Major Cosmological Correction.
